The Future of Skincare: 10 Exciting Trends that will be Huge in 2023

1. Luxury.

We’ve all had to make sacrifices these last couple of years.  Luxurious products (not necessarily with the luxury pricetag) are seeing a major comeback as we start to realize the importance of prioritizing our own self-care.  Look for skincare infused with ingredients like 24k gold or vegan silk to bring a pampered spa experience into your at-home skincare routine.

2. Science and Nature Converge.

It seems that for the last several years we have seen a great divide in skincare occurring between the all-natural and the science-based brands.  At Botanicary we believe in both the power of nature and the power of science.  Look for products formulated using potent antioxidant-packed plant extracts along with proven ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides and retinol. This means you get the best of both worlds with zero compromise.

3. Small Batch and Hyper-Fresh.

This one’s big.  This year, keep an eye out for brands that are handcrafted and small batch to ensure peak freshness and potency when they land on your skincare shelf.

4. Skin Superfoods and Farm-to-Face Skincare.

The same superfoods that are great for your gut also have the same power-packed antioxidants to nourish and brighten your skin.  Seek out skincare with superfood ingredients like turmeric, goji berries, spirulina and green tea.

5. Bio-Fermented and Probiotic Ingredients for Healthy, Nourished Skin that Radiates.

Look for well-rounded products formulated with supportive ingredients to help replenish your skin’s microbiome.  Fermentation breaks down the cellular tissue of the plants, thereby increasing the bioavailability of the naturally occurring nutritive compounds.

6. Sea/Marine Ingredients.

It’s no secret that the infamous(ly expensive) La Mer’s star ingredient is a bio-fermented algae extract.  Yes, the product that nearly every elite swears by to maintain a youthful appearance.  Fortunately, you don’t have to be Jennifer Aniston to afford a similar experience.  Sea based ingredients are abundant in highly bioavailable, concentrated antioxidants and nutrients that help protect against free radicals and maintain skin elasticity.  Look for ingredients like sea kelp bio-ferment, sea moss and sea clay for that mermaid skin of your dreams.

7. Gentle Skincare.

This year we’re skipping the harsh scrubs, abrasives and peels, and treating our skin the way it wants to be treated.  Switch to a gentle, effective cleanser like a micellar cleanser or a cleansing oil or balm, and opt for a gentle-enough-for-daily-use Lactic Acid (the acid naturally present in the skin) or fruit enzyme serum for nourished, glowing skin.

8. Unique Plant-Powered Ingredients.

Unique ingredients like CICA (Centella Asiatica) and plant-derived stem cells are having a major moment.  Centella Asiatica is a perennial creeping plant traditionally used to support faster healing of wounds.  Studies have shown that the main constituents of Centella asiatica (Asiatic acid, madecassic acid, and asiaticoside) may increase collagen synthesis.

In vitro studies on plant stem cells obtained from a Japanese orchid flower (Calanthe Discolor) have found that orchid stem cells extracts are able to induce several growth factors and stimulate the production of tissue proteins (collagen, elastin).^(1)

9. Sustainability and Climate-Consciousness.

This one isn’t directly related to skincare efficacy, but it couldn’t be more vital.  Did you know that less than 10% of plastic produced has ever been recycled even once? And even recyclable plastic can only be recycled 2-3 times before the polymer chain degrades to the point where it can no longer be used.  Look for skincare packaged in infinitely recyclable glass as well as brands that contribute a percentage of their revenue to planet-saving causes.

10. Cruelty Free.

I don’t know if you can really even call it a trend at this point.  It just seems like common sense. But a staggering number of skincare brands still haven’t gotten on board the cruelty free train.  Healthy, natural ingredients need NO ANIMAL TESTING — why would we ever put our animal friends at risk when there is no cause?  Let’s make it a trend this year to put the pressure on non-cruelty-free brands by purchasing only certified cruelty-free products.
